The Šibenik-Knin county covers the area of 2939 km2 and has 112 070 inhabitants.
The following cities and towns are part of the Šibenik-Knin county: Šibenik, Knin, Drniš, Vodice and Skradin; as are these municipalities: Bilice, Pirovac, Tisno, Primošten, Rogoznica, Cviljane, Ervenik, Kijevo, Kistanje, Orlić, Biskupija, Promina, Ružić, and Unešić.
The county covers the northern Dalmatian area of the Krka river basin, from Dinara to the Adriatic, and from Pirovac to Rogoznica, and constitutes an integral economic, geographical and transport unit.
Along its highly indented coast lies a picturesque archipelago with 242 islands, islets and reefs, of which only 6 are inhabited: Murter, Kaprije, Žirje, Prvić, Zlarin (the island of corals) and Krapanj (the island of sponge harvesters).
Of all archipelagos, the most famous is the Kornati archipelago, located in the south-western part of the County and incorporating 148 islands, islets and reefs. Due to its natural values, its cultural and historical heritage and unique beauty, the Kornati archipelago became a national park in 1980.
The river Krka (75 km) is of special importance for the economy of the County, and especially for tourism. Krka is a phenomenon of this limestone area, in which it created a unique beautiful canyon of the cascade type, with magnificent forms made of calcareous sinter deposits. Most favoured by tourists are the waterfalls Skradinski buk and Roški slap, Visovačko jezero and its islet Visovac on which a Franciscan monastery is located, the convent of St Archangel, the renovated small mills, traditional tools for softening rough woollen fabrics (stupare) and an ethnographic collection.
Part of this river and area are proclaimed national park for its enormous natural, scientific and cultural value in 1985.
The coastal area of the Šibenik region is under the influence of the Mediterranean climate (hot and dry summers, mild and wet winters), with an average annual temperature of 15.7°C, average daily insolation of seven hours, and 886 litres of precipitation per m2 annually.
The Šibenik region is located in the central part of the Croatian Adriatic coast. The exceptionally indented coast with its numerous islands and islets, the beauty of the hinterland and the river of Krka, as well as the numerous cultural and historical monuments, are reason enough to place this region among the most popular tourist destinations in Croatia.
